Where is CO2 produced in everyday situations?
Every activity generates CO2. Here you can see where and how much CO2 Swiss homes are responsible for on average. All data are per person and year:
Mobility causes the greatest amount of CO2 – some 4200 kg, comprising:
- Car fuel: 2100 kg CO2
- Car manufacture: 600 kg CO2
(A car generates about 5000 kg CO2 and is used on average by two people)
- Air travel: 1400 kg CO2
- Public transport: < 100 kg CO2
Homes are responsible for 2700 kg CO2, comprising:
- Heating and hot water: 1800 kg CO2
- Electricity: 300 kg CO2 (significantly more in countries with coal-fired power stations)
- House construction: 600 kg CO2
Private consumption generates 3600 kg CO2, largely in China and other manufacturing countries, comprising:
- Food 1200 kg CO2
- Clothing, electronics, furniture, stationery, etc.: 2400 kg CO2
Public consumption is responsible for 600 kg CO2, accounted for by public authorities, administrative offices, the army, road construction, schools, hospitals etc.
